“A Scattering of Leaves” was inspired by my front lawn. Walking outside on a fall day, looking at all the leaves and being fascinated by the accidental patterns nature creates from wind and the trees around our yard. I adore fall, it’s my favorite season. I always greet September with joyful anticipation of cooler weather (thank goodness!) and the show to come.
For this tile I wanted to focus on the patterns using just black and white. I picked the leaves from my yard imprinting them on the leather hard clay. I then covered all the areas of the tile that weren’t imprinted with 3 layers of Amaco Jet Black Velvet underglaze. Once the glaze setup, I free hand sgraffito-carved the leaves and grasses into the glazed areas. After the tile went through first bisque, I laid a light wash of the Jet Black underglaze over the leaves to give them depth, touched up the background and put the tile in for second, final bisque.
