The “Barn Owl” is a study based on photos I took while attending an owl talk at my local Audubon Society some years ago. I’ve always loved owls having grown up on a farm with both Great Horneds and Screech Owls. In this event, we were able to get fairly close to the birds (all teaching birds, rescued from injury, unable to be released) and talk in depth with their handlers. This lovely owl and I had several moments of mutual study. I’ve had this experience in the wild too – with a western Great Horned who was out on a dawn hunt – and it never fails to captivate me. In the image used as the reference she was looking me straight in the eye. It was a measuring gaze.
Clay body is Trina Buff, slab rolled and cut to size, then coated with 3 layers of Amaco Velvet Jet Black underglaze. Based on sketches done from the photos, I transferred the drawing onto the glazed tile and began sgraffito carving. This tile has been both bisqued and high fired, and is ready for hanging.
