I spent a lot of time swimming in the sea growing up and got pretty good at holding my breath under water, the better to watch the occasional fish swimming by and crabs scuttling along the bottom. I was also fascinated by the way the light broke through the water. The undulating colors come from those memories, and being a sea creature she has eyes like a fish.
The mask was made using a white stoneware, Standard 181, slab rolled and pressed into a plaster face mold. The form was carved and bisqued. It was painted using several colors of Amaco Velvet and semi-moist underglazes, and bisque fired again. The mask is finished using a water-based ceramic sealant.
