“Yellow Poplar” is a study based on one that grew outside my kitchen window at my previous home. It was always the first tree to fully drop its leaves in early fall. We used to get mists rising in the mornings as the weather moved more into autumn (don’t like driving in fog, but visually it’s a treat). I would stand in my kitchen at the window filling pages of my sketchbook with the moody, wonderful view. I lived in a largely rural area and this tree stood somewhat removed from the others. As the fog rolled in it would stand as sentinel.
Clay body is Trina Buff, slab rolled and cut to size, then coated with several layers of Amaco Jet Black Velvet underglaze. I transferred the drawing onto the glazed tile and began sgraffito carving. This tile has been both bisqued and high fired, and is ready for hanging.
Size: 5⅜” x 7⅛”.
